Elmina/Cape-coast slave castle Tour
Embark on a journey into the past with a visit to Cape Coast’s esteemed Heritage Conservation Centers: Elmina Castle and Cape Coast Castle. These significant historical sites were once central to the slave trade, from where numerous Africans were dispatched to the Americas and Caribbean islands, leading to the most extensive Diaspora worldwide.
Elmina Castle, constructed by the Portuguese in 1482 and later seized by the Dutch, was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea and the oldest European building in existence south of the Sahara. Cape Coast Castle, constructed by the Swedes in 1653 and later taken over by the British, serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of slavery.
These castles have borne witness to some of the most harrowing chapters of human history. Explore the chilling dungeons where slaves were detained, the chilling “Gate of No Return,” the auction room, and other remnants from the era of slave trade.
Your journey of discovery continues with an overnight stay at the Lemon Beach Hotel, where you can absorb the sights and sounds of the sea and enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep.
